Blenheim P6894/Q: Written off (destroyed) when lost (Failed To Return) from combat operations over France. All three crew killed. According to the official Air Ministry file into the incident (File AIR 81/1072): "Blenheim P6894 crashed at Cavillon, France, 10 July 1940. Sergeant G T Truscott, Pilot Officer T W Maslin and Sergeant S E Hinton"

Airborne from RAF Wattisham, Suffolk as one of six Blenheims tasked to attack Glisy Aerdrome, near Amiems, Somme Department, France. Five of the six Blenheims were shot down (R3916, R3815, P6894, L9468 and R3606). Blenheim P6894 was shot down over the target area by a Bf 109 of 9/JG 3; force landed at Cavillon, 16 km East North East of Amiens, Somme department, and all three crew killed.

All three crew fatalities were buried at Cavillon Communal Cemetery, Somme, France. According to a French source, roughly translated into English (see link #5 for the original French text):

"The Blenheim P6894 of the 107 Sqn. was shot down on the 10th July in Cavillon near the road to Crouy. The crew was originally buried near the wreckage, but seems to have later been transferred to cemetery of the municipality. In 1946, the RAF research and identification service placed an identifying cross on the pilot's grave"

The reported crash location of Cavillon is a commune in the Somme department in Hauts-de-France in northern France, about 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Amiens, at approximate Coordinates: 49°55′23″N 2°05′05″E.

Le Blenheim P6894/Q a été détruit au cours d'une mission au-dessus de la France. Sgt HAWKINS was killed on 19 april 1945 when the prisoner of war column in wich he was marching was attacked by Allied fighter bombers. He is buried in the Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery.

Le Sergent HAWKINS fut tué le 19 avril 1945 lorsque la colonne de prisonniers de guerre dans laquelle il marchait fut attaquée par des chasseurs-bombardiers alliés. Il est enterré au cimetière militaire de Berlin 1939-1945.

The airplane departed RAF Wattisham to attack the Amiens-Glisy Airport. Approaching the target, it was shot down by the pilot of a Me.109 and crash landed near the airfield. All three crew members became PoW.

Probable cause: Shot down by a German fighter.

Six Blenheims of 107 Sqdn. along with twelve from 110 Sqdn. and with a fighter escort, carried out bombing attacks at Airaines (Somme) to block communications in the town. All the six Blenheims were damaged by AA fire.
Blenheim R3815: Take off at 17:48 hrs for bombing sortie over France. 07/06/1940
The aircraft was damaged by AA fire during a bombing raid on enemy forces at Airaines. No aircrew casualties. Landing Ok at 19:00 hrs. Aircraft was damaged but repairable.

Six Blenheim du 107 Squadron avec douze (autres) du 110 Squadron, accompagnés d'une escorte de chasseurs, effectuent des bombardements à Airaines (Somme) pour bloquer les communications dans la ville. Les six Blenheim ont été endommagés par les tirs des AA. (Défense Contre Avions - D.C.A.)

Le lieutenant canadien Harold PLEASANCE, pilote d'un Bristol Blenheim du 107 Squadron sera le seul à ramener son avion et son équipage en Angleterre, ce 10 juillet 1940.



"On se trouvait à 18 000 pieds (environ 5500m d'altitude) quand on a rencontré des tirs de DCA très intenses, de grosses bouffées noires apparaissaient devant nous, ce qui est toujours de mauvais augure", témoignera le lieutenant canadien Harold PLEASANCE, pilote d'un autre Blenheim. "Plusieurs appareils ont été touchés et la formation s'est vite rompue. Dans le même temps, on était attaqué par de nombreux (Messerchmitt) 109".

"La mission est un désastre. Le lieutenant PLEASANCE est le seul qui parvient à ramener son bombardier en Angleterre. Deux équipages ont réussi à se poser et ont été faits prisonniers, les trois autres sont tous morts."

The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the undermentioned award in recognition of gallantry displayed in flying opera-
tions against the enemy: —
Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Acting Squadron Leader Harold Percival PLEASANCE (37914).
Squadron Leader Pleasance displayed great gallantry and a deep devotion to duty when, in June, 1940, he carried out a single aircraft reconnaissance of the Auxi-le-Chateau-Abbeville Road and the estuary of the Somme. Flying very low he successfully attacked, with gun fire, a column of transport at Hesdin, and also some thirty enemy aircraft on an advanced landing ground. Later three Junkers 87 's were dispersed by accurate fire from his air gunner, and immediately afterwards seventeen enemy aircraft weie shaken off by evading action. Squadron Leader Pleasance then made a successful attack on a second column of transport at Bernaville in the face of intense
anti-aircraft fire from which he sustained a leg wound. In spite of this, and the considerable damage to his aircraft, he carried on with his task until forced to land. He then destroyed his aircraft by fire and wenton to Rouen to make his report.
