90 SQUADRON 13 Avril 1944 Fourdrain


Au cours de la nuit du 12 au 13 avril 1944, le Stirling III type B - s/n EF162 codé WP # K du 90 Squadron, en mission pour le compte du S.O.E. afin d'effectuer un parachutage d'armes et de matériel s'écrase sur le territoire de Fourdrain à 14 kilomètres au NO de Laon (Aisne).
Le quadrimoteur avait décollé tard dans la soirée du 12 avril, (23heures 08), de la base de Tuddenham située dans le Suffolk (UK).

Four are buried in Fourdrain communal cemetery : F/S HARRISON lies in Laon (St-Just) communal cemetery, alongside seven airmen killed on Bomber Command operations in may 1942 (see Volume 3 page 86 for details.


L'appareil décolla à 23h08 de Tuddenham et mit le cap sur la France. Il s'écrasa à Fourdrain (Aisne, à 14 km au nord-ouest de Laon). Quatre aviateurs reposent au cimetière communal de Fourdrain : le F/S Harrison repose au cimetière communal de Laon (Saint-Just), aux côtés de sept aviateurs tués lors d'opérations du Bomber Command en mai 1942.

WO1 George Beverley HOWARD RCAF, mit (mitrailleur), R/96243, né le 2 mai 1920, originaire de Shawville, province du Québec, (Canada) Il est fait prisonnier (prisoner of war) dès le 13 avril 1944 dans les environs de Laon. Il sera interné dans différents stalags jusqu'à la fin de la guerre.


Flight Sergeant Alexandre Clifford George NICOL, RAF, MitA (mitrailleur), 1572739, PoW (prisoner of war). Il est fait prisonnier dès le 13 avril 1944. Il sera interné dans différents stalags jusqu'à la fin de la guerre.

A noter que la même nuit le 90 Squadron perd un autre bombardier engagé dans le même type de mission SOE, le Stirling III LJ483 codé XY # V qui s'écrase près de Roye (Somme). Les sept membres d'équipage meurent dans le crash de leur appareil et sont inhumés dans le New British Cemetery situé à l'Est de la Ville.

Note. Both crews were employed in pre-invasion supply drops to the French Resistance. Their Stirlings had logged thirty and twenty-two operational sorties respectively.

On the 15th March, F/Sgt. BOWLING was posted to the No. 90 Squadron, Mildenhall, Suffolk for operational duty. As captain and 1st pilot of a stirling bomber he successfully carried out raids on enemy occupied territory including Laon, Aulnoye, Courtrai in Belgium and mine-laying operations off the Frisian Islands.
On the night of 12/13th April, 1944, F/Sgt. BOWLING and his crew were detailed to carry out a special operation in a Stirling aircraft. The aircraft failed to return and the crew were classified as missing. Information was later received from the International Red Cross that F/Sgt. BOWLING was killed and therefore his death was presumed on the 13th April, 1944.

Le 15 mars, le Flight Sergeant BOWLING fut affecté au Squadron n° 90, à Mildenhall (Suffolk), pour des missions opérationnelles. En tant que commandant et pilote d'un bombardier Stirling, il mena avec succès des raids sur les territoires occupés par l'ennemi, notamment à Laon, Aulnoye et Courtrai en Belgique, ainsi que des opérations de minage au large des îles Frisonnes.

Dans la nuit du 12 au 13 avril 1944, le Flight Sergeant BOWLING et son équipage furent chargés d'une mission spéciale à bord d'un Stirling. L'appareil ne revint pas et l'équipage fut porté disparu. Des informations ultérieures, transmises par la Croix-Rouge internationale, indiquèrent que le Flight Sergeant BOWLING avait été tué ; son décès présumé fut donc fixé au 13 avril 1944.
