MACR No.05575
2/ Lt. Lawrence J. Berry reported: "I was flying wingman for Major Bollwerk, over France, and we were weaving over another A/C which had been hit by flak; we sighted a Marshalling Yard to our right. Major Bollwerk motioned me to follow, and we both turned in toward the Marshalling Yard to strafe it. After a few bursts from our guns. I saw tracers coming at us, and Major Bollwerk's left engine started smoking, immediately there-after catching fire. He quickly descended and belly landed. I circled three times and saw him climb out of the A/C and start walking down a lane towards two peasants pushing a cart. I noticed that this section was wooded only a small degree, and there was a town dose by, approx. 2 miles, which I cannot positively identify, but believed it to be Beauvais."
German report J 1378, gave Maj. Bollwerk's capture as near Beauvais. (40 miles north or Paris, France). Major Bollwerk was sent to Stalag Luft III, and then to Moosburg, Stalag Luft VII A.
