Je vous communique les 4 pages du bulletin d’informations de la commune de Sacy le Grand n°14 (Septembre 2011) concernant l’hommage rendu au Flying Officer H.H. MacKenzie.








Je profite de ce message pour remercier publiquement toutes les personnes qui ont participé et qui ont contribué à la réussite de cette cérémonie et à la réalisation de ce monument.
De la part des différentes autorités civiles et militaires, Françaises et Canadiennes ainsi que des membres de la famille MacKenzie je vous transmets leurs plus sincères remerciements et compliments pour cet évènement.

Je précise enfin que toutes les marques d’affection et compliments que j’ai pu recevoir suite à cet hommage mettent à bas les propos indignes et « nauséabonds » qui ont pu être écrit par « certains » sur un autre site .

Je citerais pour terminer une très belle phrase du discours de Mr le maire de Sacy le Grand, Mr Didier Warmé
« Henry Hector MacKenzie est entré dans l’histoire de Sacy le Grand et son nom y sera éternellement associé »

En ce 8 mai 2012 le maire de la commune de Sacy le Grand à souhaité associer le Flying Officer H.H. MacKenzie aux commémorations
de la victoire du 8 mai 1945. Désormais en plus du recueillement au monument aux morts de la commune une dépose de fleur se fera devant le moteur du JR 523

J'ai eu le plaisir d'accueillir les 2 et 3 juillet 2012 Kim MacKenzie et ses deux enfants Mysia et Thomas.
Ils ont profité d'un voyage en Europe pour nous rendre visite à Sacy le Grand. Kim est l'épouse de Ian MacKenzie (neveu du pilote) et elle avait déja fait le voyage
en juin 2011 pour l'inauguration du monument. Ses enfant qui n'étaient pas venus en 2011 ont souhaité rendre hommage à Harry en se rendant sur les lieux du crash dans les marais,
au monument ainsi que sur sa tombe à Beauvais.
Pour cette occasion l'équipe du "JR 523" était de nouveau rassemblée pour accueillir nos amis canadiens.

My connection to this forum and this thread is via Flt Sgt Archibald Blyth KIRKWOOD, who is also mentioned, a fellow pilot to J A MacDONALD, and H H MacKENZIE.

I was involved with BBC in Scotland in terms of tracing relatives of Flt Sgt Archibald Blyth KIRKWOOD, a fellow pilot of 198 Squadron.

The purpose of my post here is to place on record my great and most sincere thanks, as well as the thanks of everyone in Ėcosse, for the tribute paid to these three RAF pilots.


4 years ago, in Larmor-Plage, I was present at a similar ceremony involving an uncle of my cousin, F/O Russell LYON, a spitfire pilot of 234 Squadron, shot down near L’Orient.

Earlier this year, in February, I was also privileged to be present at the ceremony in La Poterie Cap d’Antifer, just to the north of Le Havre, commemorating the death of Pvt Hugh Duncan McDonald McINTYRE, ‘C’ Company, 2 Para, during the Bruneval Raid (also known as Operation Biting).

This ceremony took place on the 70th anniversary of the 1942 raid. A memorial parachute drop was planned by veterans of 2 Para, but had to be cancelled due to bad weather.

In this case I found 4 nieces, 2 of whom, from Canada, travelled to France for the ceremony.

For some reason, in Ėcosse and the rest of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, we are reluctant to commemorate the memories of these heros; perhaps because it is seen as a glorification of war.


From my point of view I see it as only the commemoration of the sacrifice that they made; and I am very pleased to see that your community believe the same.


Back in 2008 in L’Armor Plage I kept asking people why so much honour was being paid to one Spitfire pilot.


The consistent answer was “C’est symbolique !” !

I would really like to reply in la langue Francaise, as I had a typical
Scottish secondary school education with 6 years of the study of French.

In fact in connection with a student technical exchange scheme when I was
at university I spent 2 months working for Gaz de France at St Denis !

In other words, I used to be reasonably fluent in French.

My big problem is that I later worked in Sweden for 6 years, and became fully
fluent in Swedish, to the extent, that, if I go back to a Swedish speaking
environment, then, after a day or two, I start thinking in Swedish, and, even,
sometimes, dreaming in Swedish ! <bg>

These days, if I try to speak or write in French, my brain interprets this as an
instruction to find the words in a foreign language, and defaults to Swedish, even
for the simplest words !
